National Parks & Wildlife Service in conjunction with “Galway Living Bog” welcomes you to Wetlands Day – We would love to see you at this year’s event exploring all that Carrownagappul bog has to offer. We will start at the Galway Living Bog Centre, H53 TN67 Castlegar, (near Mountbellew) Co. Galway at 1pm with a 1 hour presentation on the bog’s ecology, hydrology, restoration measures, flora, fauna etc. We will then travel a short distance to the bog itself for a guided walk.
Carrownagappul Bog SAC, adjacent to the Galway town of Mountbellew, is one of the biggest SACs and one of the largest examples of remaining, restorable active raised bog in Ireland. Measuring 850 acres it contains fine examples of raised bog habitat and species, and between 2016 – 2020 it is one of 12 raised bogs nationwide that will be restored under a European funded LIFE project: ‘The Living Bog’.
All are welcome and we look forward to see you there!

World Wetlands Day occurs on 2nd February and to mark this global event you are invited to celebrate the importance of wetlands with an illustrated talk in Shannon Town Public Library (with light lunch) followed by a site visit to the Shannon Town Community Wetlands (STCW).
This year’s theme is ‘Wetlands and Human Wellbeing’. The Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) and the STCW will host a very special lunchtime event to explore the importance of wetlands and human wellbeing followed by a site visit to explore the biodiversity value of this urban wetlands site.
The event will be led by Ruairi 0 Conchüir (LAWPRO) and voluntary members of the STCW, Olive Carey and John O’ Brien. A major focus of the event
will be “Wetlands and Human Wellbeing’ and the key role the STCW has played in connecting the local community and schools with nature in & around the wetlands. Please bring suitable footwear for the site visit.
The talk will commence at 12:30 and the walk at 14:30. This is a free event and all are welcome!

On February 2nd at 10:00, the Irish Peatland Conservation Council are running a Scrub Removal Event, on Lodge Bog, near the Bog of Allen Nature Centre.
Peatlands contain 90% water and offer our communities many services from flood mitigation, a haven for biodiversity, carbon storage and recreation.
Celebrating World Wetlands Day 2nd February; come along and join us for a morning of action for wetlands. Scrub encroachment at the edges of bogs both limits water accessing the surface and shades the bog surface limiting growth of bog plants. Come help with scrub clearance!
Please note: Strong footwear such as wellies, and warm clothes are recommended. The IPCC team will provide equipment.
Registration is essential – email bogs@ipcc.ie
